Pre War
Born on 24 June 1894 in Waterford, Ireland to Robert and Hannah Gatward and was baptised at Ballincollig on 16 September 1894. His father was a farrier sergeant in the 10th Hussars but he died on 1 February 1904 in India.
On the 1911 Census William was living at 444 West Green Road, Tottenham with his widowed mother and brother Robert and was working as a railway clerk. He was said to be living in Welwyn, Herts on enlistment. His mother died in 1911.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Putney as Private 3289 in the City of London Yeomanry.
He may have served in Salonika and Egypt before taking part in the Gaza campaign.
He died of wounds received in action during the Battle of Mughar Ridge.
Additional Information
His pay owing and a war gratuity was split equally between family members: Uncles William and Horace Bradbury, Aunts Fannie Marsh, Rachel, Fanny and Elsie. Robert Horace Gatward served with Duke of Cornwall,s Light Infantry and was killed in action on 23 July 1916 at Delville Wood, on the Somme, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
