Pre War
William was born in Bardney, Lincolnshire, the son of James & Sarah Ann Gates, who later lived at Hoggs Norton, Knebworth.
Wartime Service
He was most likely wounded during the Battle of Ancre on the 13th November when the Battalion suffered very high casualties during an assault on German positions. William would have eventually been returned to the UK for treatment but sadly died from the effects of his injuries.
