Alfred John Henry Webb was born in Bovingdon, Herts, in 1896, the son of Henry and Emma Webb (nee Burgin). He was one of five children, but one died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at the home of his grandfather, James Burgin, a beerhouse keeper, at the Bricklayer's Arms, at Hog Pits, Bovingdon. His father's occupation was given as blacksmith. His grandfather died in 1909 and by the time of the 1911 Census the family had moved to 47 Ellesmere Road, Berkhamsted, and Alfred was then working as a general labourer.
Wartime Service
Alfred enlisted in 1914 in Berkhamsted and joined the Royal Field Artillery. He served as a Gunner with the 50th Battery, 34th Brigade in France from 18 March 1915.
He was wounded during the Battle of the Somme and died of his wounds on 21 August 1916, aged 21, and is buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Additional Information
His younger brother Leonard received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £22 18s 0d.
Pension cards exist showing his mother as dependant, but give no indication of the pension amount received.
His father, H W Webb ordered Alfred's headstone inscription while living at 47 Ellesmere Road, Great Berkhamsted, Herts., it reads: "DAY BY DAY WE ALL DO MISS HIM BUT IN HEAVEN WE HOPE TO MEET HIM".
