Pre War

Charles Arthur Weaver was born in Hammersmith, London on 26 Aug 1889 (baptised 13 Oct 1889 at St Paul’s, Hammersmith) to Henry Weaver, coal porter, and Elizabeth (nee James), they were living at 57, Averhill street, Fulham Palace Road, Fulham at that time.


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Flora May (born 1881), James (born 1885) and Charles were living at 11, Rose and Crown Lane, Fulham.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Florence  (laundress), James (printer), Charles and William (born 1894) were living at 12, Campbell Street, Fulham.


Charles enlisted in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment as Private 9170 in the 2nd Battalion some time in 1907/08. No Service Record was found for him.


On the 1911 Census Charles was recorded as Private at Ghopiri Barracks, Poona (now Pune), India.


His parents later lived at 111, Glebe Rd., Letchworth, Herts.

Wartime Service

Charles and the 2nd Battalion were stationed in Bangalore (now Bengalaru) in India at the outbreak of the Great War and were mobilised on part of the 27th (Bangalore) Brigade in Indian Expeditionary Force B on 10 Sep1914 and were intended to assault Dar es Salaam in German East Africa.


The Force sailed from Bombay on 16 October with Tanga as the target for an attack. After the failure of the Battle of Tanga (2–5 Nov), in which Charles was reported to have been killed in action on 5 Nov 1914. Some reports state ‘died of wounds’.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £7 0s 6d was paid to his father. Brother James served with Middlesex Regiment as Private G/106146, survived and was discharged in Sep 1919.
