Pre War

William Henry was born in Southend on Sea on 24 July 1897 to William Henry Waymark, a commercial traveller, and Elizabeth Jane (nee Whaley).


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Glenthorn Road, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne. On the 1911 Census the family were living at Melborne House, Maple Road, Ashstead, Epsom, Surrey. William was educated at Dulwich College and Leatherhead. His father was living at Bellswood Cottage, Bushey Heath, Watford. His mother was living at Royapettah, Ox lane Harpenden in 1918 and later at Castle Main Avenue, Bournemouth, Hants.

Wartime Service

William attested for the Middlesex Regiment on 29 Jan 1916 giving his address as 62 Elsinore Road, Forest Hill and occupation as clerk in a Chartered Accountants. He was given the serial number 6877 as a Territorial, this was amended to 202571.


He went to France on 30 Nov 1916, posted to 56 Division Training Battalion on 11 Dec 1916 and joined 1/7 Battalion Middlesex on 5 Jan 1917.  After periods in the trenches William was hospitalised on 10 Feb 1917 with Frostbite to feet being treated at 7 Casualty Clearing Station and 13 General Hospital before being repatriated to England on 14 Feb 1917 for further treatment at East Suffolk Hospital until 30 Mar 1917 and then Red Cross Hospital (no location) until 18 Apr 1917.


William returned to France on 5 Jun 1917 joining 12th Battalion Middlesex near Ypres. He was killed in Action on 3 Aug 1917 on the Gheluvelt Plateau, Ypres during the major Battle of Passchendale.


His remains where not recovered and he is remembered on the Menin Gate, Ypres.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £4 10s and arrears of £2 9s 7d was paid to his mother.Elder brother Edwin Archer attested for Royal Army medical Corps in In Oct 1914 but was rejected due to Valvular Disorder of Heart.
