Oliver George was born on 29 Aug 1896 in Frogmore (baptised 8 Nov 1896, Holy Trinity, Frogmore) to John Garrett, a labourer, and Kezia (nee Webb). His parents married 1890 in the St Alban’s district, Herts. John died 1935 in Frogmore, Herts, aged 78, and was buried 9 Feb at Holy Trinity, Frogmore; Kezia died 1955 in the St Alban’s district aged 86.

On the 1901 Census, Oliver G was living with his parents, Daisy Mary (born 1891), Jessie Victoria (born 1898) and Ernest John (born 1901) at Bury Dell Lane, Frogmore. On the 1911 Census, George, a baker’s boy aged 14, still lived in Frogmore, with his parents, Jessie, Ernest and Elsie.


Wartime Service

Oliver enlisted as Private 16890 in the Northumberland Fusiliers. No Service record was found for Oliver.


He went to France on 10 Mar 1915 to join 1st or 2nd Battalions of the Northumberland Fusiliers in 28 Division. This Division was used as hasty reinforcements to stem the German Gas Attack at Ypres on 22 Apr 1915 beginning the 2nd Battle of Ypres (22 Apr – 25 May 1915). Oliver was presumed  to have died in this fighting on 8 May 1915.


His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.

Additional Information

 War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £6 2s 1d was paid to his father John. Oliver George’s death was presumed to have on 8 May 1915; his remains were not recovered and he remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.This is the only George GARRETT died 1915.
