Pre War

Clifford Edgar Garrard was born in Kingston, Ballarat, Victoria, the son of Arthur and Alice Garrad and educated at Urtquhart St State School No. 2103, Ballarat and the Ballarat School of Mines.


His occupation was as an Assayer and he gave his address as Majestic Mansions, Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, Victoria. He was married to Lily M Garrad, whose address was given as 11 Duke Street, Windsor, Melbourne, Victoria. His parents lived at Yarrawawalla, Victoria.

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 8 January 1916 as a Sergeant in the 39th Battalion, Machine Gun Section and his unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. 


He was later commissioned Lieutenant and was killed in action on 31 August 1918 at Clery-sur-Somme at the age of 34. 

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs A Garrard of Yarrawalla, Victoria, Australia, ordered his headstone inscription: "THEY MISS HIM MOST WHO LOVED HIM BEST".
