Pre War

Leonard Garment was born in Berkhamsted in 1887 the son of Edwin and Lizzie Garment and baptised in Northchurch on 2 October 1887. He was one of nine children, although two died in infancy.

On the 1891 Census the family were living at High Street, Northchurch where his father was working as a chimney sweep.  They had moved 79 Gossoms End, Northchurch by 1901.

His parents remained at Gossoms End in 1911 but Leonard had moved out of the family home and was a boarder at the home of Edwin and Lucy Fowler at 5 Middle Road, Berkhamsted, where he was working as a general labourer which remained his occupation at the time of enlistment.

His father later lived at 23 Mill Street, Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

Leonard enlisted on 22 November 1915 to serve with the Hertfordshire Regiment and was passed fit for service subject to dental treatment. He was immediately embodied and sent to camp at Halton Park, Tring.

On 28 January 1916 after 68 days he was discharged as “not likely to become an efficient soldier on medical grounds”.  Although his character was described as very good he had suffered from a cough on and off for two years and during that time had been laid up on occasions for a few days at a time.

He was admitted to hospital on 30 December suffering from a cough and expectoration. On examination it was noted that he was markedly emaciated and also suffering from remittent [fluctuating] temperature and night sweats. He was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis not caused by military service.

He died in Berkhamsted on 2 July 1916, aged 28 and is buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted.

Additional Information

He was not entitled to war medals as he did not see active service, and his parents were not entitled to a war pension or war gratuity. He is not listed in CWGC records.
