Pre War

Fredrick Thomas was born in Sawley, Derbyshire in 1891 the second son of William, Police Constable, and Isabella Gardiner.

By 1901 the family had moved to Stonebroom, Shirland, Chesterfield. In 1911 the family were now living at Codnor Park and Frederick was working as a Teacher in Somerset. Frederick married Lucy Margaret Amy Gregory in 1916, (probably Harpenden.)

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby) Regiment early in the war but was commissioned on 13 Sep 1915 as 2nd Lieutenant Highland Light Infantry.

He was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain. He was attached to the 12th (Service) Battalion. The 12th Battalion HLI were involved on the opening day of the Battle of Paschendaele at Pilckem Ridge and so Frederick was killed in action on that day 31 Jul 1917.

His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
