Pre War
John William FULLER was born in Burwell, Cambridgeshire, in 1884, son of Robert Fuller a Farm Steward and Ann Fuller (nee Jaggard). One of their nine children. His parents were married in 1878 in Dullingham, Cambs.
He was Baptised on 5th October 1884, in the Parish of Burwell, Cambs.
1891 Census records John aged 7, living with his parents, four brothers, sisters Martha (9) and Nellie (5), at Rayners Ditch Farm, Reach Terrace, Burwell, Cambs.
1901 Census, John aged 16, is working as a Farm labourer, living with his parents, three brothers and three sisters at The Broads, North Street, Burwell, Cambs.
We believe John served with the Grenadier Guards, prior to his marriage to Agnes, his service number 11012, was issued in late 1903. Possible served 7 years with the Colours and 5 years with the Reserve.
John married Agnes Eliza Webb of Chesterton, Cambridge, Cambs, at Saint Luke’s Church, Chesterton, Cambridge, Cambs, on 27th December 1909. They went on to have two children Ethel Kathleen (B 1911) and Alice Florence (B 1912).
1911 Census records John (26) married to Agnes, he is employed as a Farm labourer, living at New Buildings, Great Chishall, Cambs.
His parents later moved to Smith End, Barley, Royston, Herts.
Wartime Service
At the out-break of war John would have been in the Army Reserve, he was mobilized for war service, he disembarked at Le Havre, France, on 22nd August 1914, with the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, seeing action on the Western Front.
John was Killed in action during the Battle of the Somme, on 14th September 1916, (Battle of the Somme 1st July to 18th November 1916) aged 32, he has no known grave he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing on the Somme. Pier and Face 8D.
Additional Information
Agnes received a Widows Pension of 22s/11d, a week from 2nd April 1917, the pension records record Agnes as living at 4 Allerton Terrace, Meldreth, Cambs.
His effects of £24-08-06, pay owing and his war gratuity of £12, went to his widow Agnes.
His brother Private 27593 Charles Edward Fuller was Killed in Action on 23rd August 1918.
