Pre War
Alexander William Fuller was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in the early part of 1894, son of James Fuller a, Carman and Jessie Fuller (nee Hickson). One of nine children.
His parents were married at St Paul’s Church, Clerkenwell, on 13th September 1891.
1901 Census records Alexander aged 7, living with his parents, Brothers James (9), William (2), and sister Ada (4) at, 11 Bedford Road, Enfield, Middx.
1911 Census records Alexander, aged 17, single, a Private and a Van Driver at, Government Barracks, Kempston, Beds. His parents, four brothers and three siters are now living at, 2 Albert Cottages, Grove Road West, Enfield Wash, Middx.
His brother Albert was born in 1914, and his father James died in 1915 aged 57.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Alexander was a serving soldier with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, stationed at Mullingar, Ireland. Mobilized for war they sailed from Belfast aboard the S.S. “Oronsay” For Le Havre, France, on 14th August 1914, arriving the following day 15th. Alexander arrived on 19th September 1914, with the remainder of the Battalion and the remainder of their equipment. Seeing action on the Western Front. He was Killed in Action on 27th September 1918, in the area of Ytres, France, during the Battle of the Canal du Nord, (27th Sept – 1st Oct 1918), which was part of the Battle of the Hindenburg Line, (12th Sept – 12th Oct 1918), aged 24.
His body was recovered from map reference: 57C. Q18. B. 23.
Additional Information
His mother Jessie received a dependents pension of 5/- a week from 22nd April 1919, and his effects of £32-17s-8d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £20.
