Pre War

George Warren was born on 6th January 1890, in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, son of William Warren a, House Painter, and Maria/Maud Warren (nee Garrett). One of eleven children.


He was Baptised on 24th August 1890, in Cheshunt, Herts with his twin brother Albert.


Brother Albert died in the early part of 1891, aged 1.


1891 Census records George aged 1, living with his parents, sisters Alice (16), Florry (12) and four brothers in, Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt, Herts.


1901 Census, George (10) and the family are still living at 45 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt.


George married Matilda Macklin of Southend-on-Sea, Essex, on 4th September 1910, in Cheshunt, Herts. They went on to have two children George William Albert born in 1911 and Nellie Daisey Maud born in 1913.


1911 Census records George (21), wife Matilda (18) and 3-month-old son George, living at 45 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt. His widowed father William, sister Emily (20) and brother Albert (16), are living with George’s oldest sister Alice and her husband William Green and their family in Collage Road, Cheshunt.  

Wartime Service

George travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist in the Hertfordshire Regiment, issued with the service number 4630 (his service number indicates he enlisted in late January, early February 1915), when service numbers were standardised in 1917, he was issued with the new number 266448. 


On completion of his training George was sent to France, seeing action on the Wester Front, he was Killed in Action on 30th October 1917, he has no known grave he is Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium to the missing. Panel 153.

Additional Information

At the time of his death, it is believed George was separated from his wife Matilda. His pension record card show 19/2 a week from 20th August 1918, was awarded to Miss Amy Debenham of Cheshunt Park, Cheshunt, Herts, the Guardian of the two children, George and Nellie. His effects of £3-17s-02d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £12-10s-00d, was also awarded to Miss Debenham for the benefit of the children.


1921 Census records George (10) and Nellie (8) are back with their mother Matilda, who has remarried to Herbert Jago, and they are living at 38 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt.
