Pre War

Alfred Charles Warren was born in Widford, Near Ware, Herts in 1888 to Joseph and Rose Warren and lived there all his life. He was baptised on 7 October 1888 in Widford.


On the 1911 Census he was living with his widowed mother and siblings at Widford and was employed as a domestic gardener.  In 1912 he married Nellie Prior and they had two children, Reginald in 1913 and Doris in 1916 and they were living at Medcalf Hill, Widford, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted at Hertford, Herts, initially into the Hertfordshire Regiment, No. 316, later serving with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, and then  transferring as Serjeant (Serjt. TR/7/6363) to the 93rd Bn. Training Reserve which was based at Chisledon, Wilts.


At the time of his death in the 1st Eastern General Hospital in Cambridge, he was an Acting Sergeant in the 262nd Btn Infantry, "E"  Company. Cause of death was given as pneumothorax, (collapsed lung) which can be caused by chest injury or disease. 

Additional Information

His widow Nellie received a war gratuity of £17 10s and pay owing of £15 19s 5d. She was also awarded a pension for herself and her two children of £1 5s 5d a week from 8 April 1918 and gave her address as 81 Nursery Road, Bishop's Stortford, Herts. She married Robert Flint in 1921.
