Pre War

Born in 1893 in Much Hadham son of George and Alice Mary Warner of Victoria Terrace, Much Hadham - one of six sons, and was living in Hadham Cross in 1911 as a gardener.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Tewkesbury formerly Private 17555 Gloucestershire Regiment, entered France on 18 July 1915. The 181st Machine Gun Corps joined the 2/6 London Division on 29th June 1916. Francis was killed in action.

Additional Information

He is named incorrectly as (P). W. Warner on the Hadham Cross Congregational Church Roll of Honour.


Francis is also commemorated on his family’s grave in St Edmund of Canterbury RC Church, Old Hall Green. His part of the inscription reads:

ALSO OF FRANCIS WILLIAM, (FRANK) SIXTH SON OF ABOVE (George Warner) KILLED IN ACTION IN FRANCE
AUGUST 12TH 1916 AGED 23 YEARS. BURIED IN ST LOUEZ(sic*2) MILITARY CEMETERY NEAR PARIS FRANCE
