Welwyn Village Memorial, Welwyn, St Mary the Virgin Roll of Honour, Welwyn

Pre War

Born in Welwyn on 15 September 1881 to William and Rose Ward, one of 14 children and baptised at St. Mary's Church, Welwyn on 4 December 1881.


He later became a chorister there, first as a treble and then as a bass. The family lived at The Royal Oak in Fore Street which was run by his father.


His father also opened a bakery and Edward became a baker journeyman and assisted in the business. He attended the Welwyn National School and played for Welwyn Football Club until the war broke out. He was also a member of the Oddfellows (becoming secretary of the Welwyn Lodge) and the local social club.


He married Ellen Warsfold on 24th April 1915 and moved to Melbourne House in Mill Lane, when he worked as a clerk/collector for the Welwyn Gas Company.

Wartime Service

After his brother Harry's death in April 1917 he joined the 4th Battalion of the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment, enlisting at Watford, Herts and was killed in action on 5th November the same year.  

Additional Information

A memorial service was held on 25th November at St Mary's Welwyn. Brother to Harry Ward killed in action on 18 April 1917. War gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 10s 10d awarded to his widow Ellen. Probate granted in London on 31 December to his widow Ellen Ward and Herbert Edwin Bullard, tailor, with effects of £329 16s 11d.
