Pre War

Leonard James Curl was born in Berkhamsted, Herts, in 1892, the son of James and Mary Ann Curl and was baptised at Great Berkhamsted on 13 July 1892. He was one of seven children, although three had died by 1911.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at 40 High Street, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a horse keeper on a farm. They remained at the same address in 1911 at which time, Leonard was working as a postman for the GPO.

He was said to be living in Sevenoaks, Kent at the time of enlistment.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London at the outbreak of war and initially served with the Royal Army Service Corps (Reg. No. 019466) later transferring to the 1st/6th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment.

He arrived in France on 19 December 1914 with the RASC and probably joined the Royal Warwickshire regiment prior to them moving to Italy in November 1917.

He died from influenza on 29 October 1918, aged 26, and is buried in Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension, Italy.
