Harry Curl was born on 18 April 1884 in St Albans, Hertfordshire, the son of Frederick and Margaret Curl, and was baptised on 1 June 1885 in Frogmore, nr St Albans, Herts. He was one of six children.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Prospect Road, St Albans where his father was working as a gardener. By 1901 they had moved to Newgate Cottages, Sandridge, Hertfordshire (north of St Albans) where his father was working as a bricklayer's labourer and Harry was working as a farm labourer.
He married Nellie Bacon in 1907 in St Albans and on the 1911 Census they were living at 47 Brent View Road, Hendon, Middlesex with their two children, Alfred Frederick (2) and Ethel Primrose (11 months). Harry was then working as a general labourer. They later had two more children, Arthur in 1912 and Irene in 1917.
Wartime Service
Harry enlisted in St Albans and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment. He served with the 8th Battalion in France from 30 August 1915 and was promoted to Sergeant.
He died of wounds received in action on 3 November 1916 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £12 and pay owing of £5 12s 12d. She also received a pension of £1 11s 3d a week for herself and her four children and gave her address on pension records as 35 Dalton Street, St Albans.
