Pre War
Alfred Curl was born on 11 May 1892 in Northchurch, Nr Berkhamsted, Herts, the eldest son of George and Lizzie Curl (nee Davis) and baptised on 3 July 1892. He was one of seven children.
On the 1901 Census the family were living in Bell Lane, Northchurch where his father was working as a general labourer. By 1911 they had moved to Orchard End, Northchurch, at which time Alfred's occupation was shown as a Timber Carter.
In late 1915 Alfred married Beatrice Rogers in York and was living there when he enlisted.
Wartime Service
Alfred enlisted in York and joined the 144th York Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery as Gunner 3271 & 294266. This unit went to France on 18 June 1916. Some records show him as Driver which may indicate that as the Battery was Heavy Artillery (5 inch Guns) it was lorry drawn.
He was wounded and died of his wounds at the 55th Casualty Clearing Station on 29 December 1917, aged 25. He is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His wife, Mrs. B. Curl, of 23, Layerthorpe, York ordered his headstone inscription: "EVER REMEMBERED". Beatrice received a war gratuity of £9 10s and pay owing of £8 14s 1d. she also received a pension of 13s 9d a week.
His younger brother George served with the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 1 July 1918.
