Pre War

Thomas was born in Stevenage, the son Thomas Franklin.


Thomas senior, was the head of local firm Mssers T W and P Franklin.  They had lived at Northfield, Stevenage, but later moved to Bedford.  He had died by the the time of Thomas' (junior) death.

Wartime Service

At the commencement of war Thomas was a subaltern in the 5th Bedfords, but was promoted to the Brigade Staff shortly after mobilisation.


He was with the "Fighting Fifth" when they landed in Gallipoli and served throughout that campaign and while serving there was promoted to Captain.


After evacuation from the Dardanelles he was promoted to the headquarters staff in Egypt and then to Brigade Major. 


Earlier in 1917 he was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the president of the French Republic.


He died of wounds in Palestine.


Additional Information

The CWGC records show his rank as Captain, but the newspaper article dated 15/12/1917 states that he has recently been made Brigade Major.
