Pre War
William Fowler was born in 1884 in Great Gaddesden, Herts, the son of Henry and Adelaide Fowler and one of five boys. He was baptised at St John the Baptist Church, Great Gaddesden on 30 November 1884.
On the 1891 Census, the family were living at Bird's Cottages, Potten End, Great Gaddesden, Herts, where his father was working as a Bricklayer's labourer. By 1901 they had moved to Chapel Street, Hemel Hempstead and William was working as a Grocer's Assistant. His father had changed occupation and was working as a Gardener.
On the 1911 Census the family were living at 36 Alma Road, Hemel Hempstead at which time William was working as a Carter.
Wartime Service
He served in France with the 1st and 11th Battalions, Royal Warwickshire Regiment (Reg. No. 28838).
After 4 years service he suffered from rheumatism and spent time in hospital in France, Leicester and finally West Herts Hospital (Hemel Hempstead) where he died on 6 May 1919 aged 34. He is buried in Heath Lane Cemetery, Hemel Hempstead. (There is no record of a CWGC headstone).
Additional Information
Not found on CWGC records. Brother to Frank Fowler who served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and died 5 May 1915. N.B. There are pension cards linking the two brothers but no record of any payment made to their mother. Brothers Albert, Arthur and Sydney all served and survived the war.
