Son of William and Alice (nee SUMNER) WALTER of Watford; husband of Hannah Milburn (nee THOMLINSON) WALTER of York.
His parents married 1 January 1871 at St John the Baptist, Aldenham, Herts. William died 1922 in Watford aged 78, and was buried 9 October in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Alice died 1929 in the Watford district aged 83.
Arthur was born 1880 in Aldenham, and baptised 25 July 1880 at St John the Baptist, Aldenham. He married 24 December 1912 at Copmanthorpe, Yorks; they had one child. Hannah never remarried, and died 7 February 1950 in York aged 72.
He has an entry in the National Probate Calendar.
On the 1881 Census, aged 8 months he lived in Aldenham, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1891 Census, a scholar aged 10 he still lived in Aldenham, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1901 Census, he was probably serving in South Africa. On the 1911 Census, a Sergeant in the 18th (Queen Mary’s Own) Hussars aged 29, he was stationed in South Tidworth, Hants.
He enlisted 4 October 1899 for 7 years’ service with the Colours, 5 years in the Reserves: aged 18.
He served at Home 4 October 1899 to 25 November 1900, during which time he was appointed Lance-Corporal 6 April 1900.
Served in South Africa 26 November 1900 to 31 October 1902, being awarded the Queen’s South Africa medal and the King’s South Africa medal.
He served at Home again 1 November 1902 to 14 August 1914, during which time he was promoted Corporal 1 April 1904, appointed Lance-Sergeant 23 January 1906, promoted Sergeant 6 June 1908, and re-engaged to complete 21 years’ service 13 August 1911.
Wartime Service
He served with the B.E.F. from 15 August 1914, was appointed Acting Sergeant-Major 26 October 1914, and promoted Sergeant-Major 20 March 1915.
He was appointed to a commission as Second Lieutenant and posted to the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment 25 June 1917.
He was formerly Serjeant 4924 18th Hussars; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 15 August 1914, and was killed in action.
