Pre War

William George Frederick Walsh was born 12 November 1879 in Sheerness, Isle of Sheppey, Kent, the son of Maurice John and Annie Dorrington Walsh.

On the 1881 Census the family were living at Winstanley Road, Minster, Sheppey, Kent, where his father was a Master at Arms in the Royal Navy. They had moved to 97 Alma Road, Sheerness by 1891, his father then being described as Petty Officer, Royal Navy.

His mother died in 1892, aged 37 and his father remained living at 97 Alma Road with three of William's siblings, Charles, Ellen and Annie.

He married Florence Lily Hemsworth in 1908 in the Medway area of Kent. The couple emigrated to Canada and were living in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on the 1911 Canadian Census.

Florence must have later returned to England as she is named as William's next of kin on his attestation paper in 1914 as living at 75 Lansdowne Road, Sheffield, England. He gave his occupation as accountant and claimed to have served for four years with the 3rd Middlesex Field Artillery.

Wartime Service

William enlisted in Ottawa, Canada on 25 August 1914 and served as Private 1093 in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry,  as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

He was killed in action on 6 May 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Additional Information

His wife Florence later lived at 1 Heath Cottage, Codicote, Welwyn, Herts.
