Pre War
George William FOWLER was born in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, on 16th July 1893, son of George Fowler, a Bricklayer and Elizabeth Fowler (nee Swaby). The eldest of their nine children although one died in infancy.
George Jr. was Baptised on 3rd September 1893, in the Parish of Aldbury, Herts.
1901 Census records George Jr. aged 7, living with his parents, sister Sarah (5) and brother John (1) in the Village of Aldbury, Herts, his grandfather John Fowler (73) is living with the family.
1911 Census, George Jr. (17), is working as a Farm Labourer, living with his parents, four sisters and two brothers, in Aldury Village, Herts. His brother Leonard Fowler was born in 1912.
Wartime Service
George Jr. travelled to the County Town of Hertford, to enlist, firstly as a Private in the Hertfordshire Regiment, with the service No. 4735, his service number indicates he enlisted in March 1915, before being transferring to the Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service No. 266500. On completion of his training George Jr. was sent to the Western Front.
He was wounded in action on 22nd March 1918, and taken a Prisoner of War (POW), in the Region of Epehy, France, he died of his wounds on 17th June 1918, aged 24, he is buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, France. Grave Ref: VI. A. 13.
Additional Information
His mother Elizabeth was awarded a Dependents Pension of 6s/- a week from 24th June 1919, and his effects of £12-17s-07d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £19.
