Pre War

Montague George Fountain was born in Markyate in 1884 (Baptised 5 Jun 1887) to Elizabeth Anstee (no father recorded).

On the 1891 Census Elizabeth, a widow, together with sons Arthur (born 1877) and Montague were living at Hicks Lane Markyate, Caddington.
Montague married Kate Mardle in Sep 1904.

On the 1911 Census Montague was living at 93, Russell Street Luton with his wife Kate, son Harold, (born 21 Apr 1908) and daughter Ivy May (born 21 Jun 1905). Also recorded was a boarder William Sharp (born 1887).

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for Montague. He was probably enlisted in Mar 1916 as Gunner 132456 Royal Field Artillery and was posted to 3rd Division Ammunition Column. 3rd Division and its Ammunition Column had been with the BEF since Aug 1914 and was present at many major Battles such as Mons & Ypres in 1914, Loos (1915), Somme (1916), Arras and Passchendaele (1917), defence against the German Offensive in the spring of 1918. Montague had probably been with the 3rd Division Ammunition Column from 1917 and was killed in action on 24 Aug 1918 at a time between named engagements but casualties occurred from enemy Artillery fire etc.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £4 4s 10d was paid to his widow Kate, she also received probate of £229 19s 5d.  A later address for his widow was 52, St Saviours Crescent, Luton.
