Michael George Wallis was born in Berkhamsted, Herts in 1896, the son of John and Ellen Wallis and one of two children. He had a younger brother John.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 19 Sandringham Road, Willesden, Middlesex where his father was working as a bricklayer. By 1911 they had moved to 74 Queens Road, Slough, Bucks at which time 15 year old Michael (then known as George) was working as a van boy for the Co-operative Society.
He was said to be living at Crouch End, London, at the time of enlistment.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in London and joined the Royal Field Artillery as a Bombardier with C Battery, 88 Brigade, serving in France from 17 July 1915.
He received the Military Medal and Bar for bravery in the field. (circumstances unknown)
He died of wounds, aged 21, at the 2nd Casualty Clearing Station on 8 October 1917 and is buried at Outersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £14 10s and pay owing of £17 19s 7d. She also received a pension of 5s a week (later increased to 7s a week). His father, Mr J Wallis of 74 Queen's Road, Slough, Bucks., ordered his headstone inscription: "UNTIL THE DAY BREAKS".
