George Wallis was born in West Han/Stratford, London/Essex, in 1881, son of George T. Wallis a, Labourer and Emma Wallis (nee Norris). One of nine children although two died in infancy. (Both his parents originated from Cheshunt, Herts).


1891 Census Records George Jr. aged 9, at school, living with his parents, sisters Clara (22), Alice (14), Annie (5), Ellen (1), and brother William (3) at 9 Village Street, West Ham, London/Essex.


No 1901 Census record was found for George Jr. His parents, two sisters and brother William were living at 18 Marcus Street West Ham, London/Essex.


1911 census, George Jr. (30) is working as a General Labourer, living with his parents, sister Clara and brother William at, 19 Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts. His nephew Charles Henry Brand (2) was staying with the family.


George Jr. married widow Emily Mable Ann Gray (nee Baker) on 5th August 1911, in Edmonton, Middx. Emily had three children by her first marriage and two children with George Jr. Violet Ellen Maud born 1912 and Lilian Emily born 1915. 

Wartime Service

George Jr. enlisted at Enfield, Middx, on 18th September 1914, posted to the Middlesex Regiment on 22nd September 1914, with the service number G/4891. On completion of his training George Jr. was sent to France arriving on 6th March 1915, joining the 3rd Battalion, in the field. It is believed he received a Gun Shot Wound (GSW) and returned to the Uk in July 1915, on his recovery he returned in July 1916, to his Battalion, who were now in Salonika. In September 1916, Georgs Jr. was taken ill with Malaria and a heart condition, and returned to the Uk in December 1916, and taken to 2nd Western Military Hospital in Manchester, he was discharged from hospital in February 1917.


Discharged from the Army as no longer physically fit for war service under “Para 393 xvi K R” at the Hounslow, Depot on 7th March 1917. Issued with the Silver War Badge No. 195602 on 7th June 1917.


George Jr. died on 26th April 1920, he is buried in Cheshunt Burial Ground, Bury Green Road, Cheshunt, Herts. Grave Ref; 7. CR.

Additional Information

Emily received a grant of £8, on 28th July 1920, no war pension was granted as George Jr. died after his discharge from the army.


CWCG give his age at death as 46 years this is incorrect; he was 39 years old.
