Herbert Edward Foskett was born 1892 to Herbert Foster, bootmaker, and Mary Ann (nee King).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William N (born 1891), Herbert, and Sarah M (born 1896) were living at Western Road, Tring.


On the 1911 Census Herbert was listed as a railway clerk at Rickmansworth Station (London & North Western Railway) and was living with his parents, Sarah and Constance (born 1908) at High Street, Tring.

Wartime Service

Herbert Foskett enlisted in Sep 1914, becoming Private 2810 in the Hertfordshire Regiment.  Following training, in Apr 1915 he was posted to 1st/1st Battalion Hertfordshires who had been on the Western Front since Nov 1914 as part of 4th (Guards) Brigade in 2nd  Division taking part in the Battles of Festubert (May 1915) and Loos (Sep-Oct 1915), having transferred to 39 Division in 1916, participating in the Battles of Thiepval (26 Sep), Ancre Heights (1 Oct-11 Nov), Ancre (13-18 Nov) on the Somme in 1916.


By the time the Territorial soldiers were renumbered early in 1917, he was serving as Acting Sergeant 265678.  After being commissioned Second Lieutenant , Bedfordshire Regiment on 24 Jan 1917, he trained with the 5th Battalion. However, he arrived in France to join the 6th (Service) Battalion Bedfords in 37 Division on 16th Apr 1917 together with three other officers, all of whom were killed or wounded within twelve days. Herbert was reported killed in action during the Battle of Arleux on 28 Apr 1917 ( an Action of the Battles of Arras). His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.

War Gratuity and arrears of £49 8s 6d and Probate of £178 4s 6d was paid to his Father.
