Henry James Charles FORMBY was born in Waltham Abbey, Essex, on 21st July 1900, son of Henry Formby, employed at the Royal Gun Powder Factory at Waltham Abbey and Eleanor Mary Ann Formby (nee Pegrum). The eldest of three children.
He was baptised on 2nd September 1900, at the Church of St. Lawrence and Holy Cross, Waltham Holy Cross, Essex.
1901 Census records Henry Jr. aged 8 months, living with his parents, at 9 Town Mead, Waltham Abbey, Essex. His Aunts Alice Pegrum (23) and Ada Pegrum (10) are living with the family.
1911 Census records Henry Jr. (11) and brother Albert (8) staying with their Grandparents Charles and Isabella Pegrum at 3 Gordon Road, Lea Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His parents and sister Eleanor Isabella Ann (5) are living at No. 1. Gordon Road.
Wartime Service
Henry Jr. enlisted on 21st July 1917, (his 17th birthday) at Chatham, Kent, into the Royal Navy as a Boy Sailor for 12 years, issued with the service number J/75191 )CH). He obtained the rank of Ordinary Seaman on 21st July 1918. Henry Jr. died on 11th October 1918, at the Malta Hospital of Bronco Pneumonia. He is buried in the Royal Naval Cemetery, Capuccini, Malta. Grave Ref; Plot 424. Prior to his death he had been serving aboard HMS Honeysuckle a Flower-Class Corvette.
Additional Information
His mother Eleanor Formby received a Dependents Pension of 6/6 a week from 12th June 1919.
His Headstone inscription “IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR DEAR SON GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN“ was requested by his father Henry Formby, of 3 Gordon Road, Lea Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.
