Pre War

Thomas Charles Fordham was born on 25 August 1890 and baptised on 9 November 1890 in Tewin, Herts, the son of William and Jane Fordham of Lower Green, Tewin. 


In 1901 the family were living at Lower Green, Tewin  where his father was working as a bricklayer's labourer. By the 1911 Census the family were living at 87 Wellington Street, Hertford and Thomas was  working as labourer at gravel merchant. He married Florence Jenny Lemon in 1914 in  St Albans, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford and served with the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 26 July 1915.


He was killed in action at Ijser Canal Bank, near Ypres on 19 April 1916 and is buried in Essex Farm Cemetery, Belgium in a special memorial row with a cross inscribed with the words "Buried in this Cemetery".

Additional Information

 A war gratuity of £7.00 was granted to his widow Florence as well as a pension of 10 shillings a week from 6 November 1916. She was said to be living c/o Mrs Lemon, Asylum Road, Arlesey, Beds.
