Edgar Flitton was born in Markyate in 1899 (baptised 9 Apr 1899) to John Flitton, labourer, and Elizabeth (nee Ginger).

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Frederick (born 1888), William (born 1890), Olive (born 1892, Nellie (born 1894), Bertha (born 1897), Edgar and Amy (born 1901) were living at London Road, Markyate.

On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Frederick (farm labourer), Olive Eve and Nellie (straw hat machinists), Bertha (print worker), Amy, Annie Elizabeth (born 1903), Violet May (born 1905), Ethel Maud (born 1908) were living at London Road, Markyate. Edgar’s location is yet to found.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Edgar.


He was enlisted in the Rifle Brigade as Rifleman O/63 in 11th (Service) Battalion and may have gone to France with them in Jul 1915. The Battalion as part of 20 (light) Division fought at the Battles of the Somme in 1916, Passchendaele in 1917, bdefendinf against the German Spring Offensive in 1918, the Final advance in Picardy including the Battles of the Selle, Valenciennes and Sambre. Edgar survived the fighting but contracted Influenza & Bronchial Pneumania on 24 Nov 1918 and died at 34 Casualty Clearing Station at Solesmes on 4 Dec 1914

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £10 and arrears of £15 4s 5d was paid to his father.


His father, Mr John Flitton, ordered his headstone inscription, while living at 13, London Rd., Markyate, Dunstable, it reads: "LOVED AND MOURNED BY HIS MOTHER, FATHER SISTERS AND BROTHER".
