Henry Ernest John Walker was born in 1899 in Radlett, Herts, the eldest son of Henry and Adelaide Walker (nee Picton) and was baptised there on 15 October 1899. He was one of eight children, the youngest, Cyril, being born in Eastbourne in 1918.


On the 1901 Census Henry was listed with his grandparents John and Maria Picton who were living at Roundbush, Aldenham, nr Radlett, Herts. 


By 1911 the family were living at 45 Windsor Road, Watford, Herts, although his father was not listed as being at home on Census night.


Henry was believed to be living at Stow in Essex at the time of enlistment.


His mother Adelaide later lived at Rodwell Farm Cottages, Eastbourne. 

Wartime Service

Henry Ernest John Walker enlisted in Southend on Sea, Essex, initially joining the Bedfordshire Regiment, under reg. no. 37833, and later transferred to the 10th Battalion,  Essex Regiment. 


He was initially listed as missing on 26 April 1918 during the Battle of the Lys, part of the German Spring Offensive in Flanders. At the end of the war, his body was located, identified by his disc, exhumed and reburied in Hanguard Communal Cemetery Extension, France in 1923.

Additional Information

His father Henry received a war gratuity of £7 and pay owing of £8 3s 6d. His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
