Arthur was the son of Arthur Walker, of 12 West Rd., Sawbridgeworth, Herts., born in 1895.


In the 1911 census, he was recorded as a ‘Farm Labourer’.


Arthur was a professional soldier, enlisting in London before the war. He served with the 1st Battalion East Surrey Regiment, and prior to the Great War was posted to Ireland.


He was born in Sawbridgeworth and enlisted in London.

Wartime Service

With the outbreak of war, the Battalion was sent to France, arriving at Le Havre on 15 August 1914.

In early May 1917, the Battalion was a part of the 5th Division taking part in the Battle of Arras (9 April-16 May). It was near the ‘official’ end of this battle that on 8 May 1917 that Arthur Walker was killed in action. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. He was aged 21.
