Pre War

William John Fletcher was born on 4 June 1898 at Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of Joseph and Mary Fletcher (nee Payne) and one of 12 children, although four had died by 1911. He was baptised on 14 October 1898 at Berkhamsted. 


On the 1901 and 1911 Censuses the family were living at 30 Gossoms End, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a drayman. 

Wartime Service

William enlisted in Hertford and served as Lance Corporal with the 1/4 Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 23 December 1917 , aged 19, and is buried in Duhallow ADS [Advanced Dressing Station] Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £11 10s and pay owing of £2 7s 11d. She also received a pension of 3s 6d a week, later increased to 5 shillings a week.
