William Robert Waldock was born in 1884, in Great Wymondley. The son of Daniel Waldock and Alice Waldock (nee Sutton). He was Baptised on the 22nd June 1884, in Great Wymondley. One of four children.
The 1891 Census records William aged 7, living with his parents, brother Walter 1, Sisters Lillie 5 and Emma3, at his Widowed Grandmother Sarah Sutton’s home in Great Wymondley.
The 1901 Census records William aged 17, living with his parents, brother Walter 11, and sister Emma 13, in Great Wymondley. His occupation is given as a Farm Labourer.
1911 Census records William as 27, still at home with his parents, brother Walter 21 and Sister Emma 23, in Great Wymondley. His occupation is given as a Farm Labourer.
Wartime Service
William enlisted at Hitchin, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 20968.
He was Killed in Action on the 30th July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, (1 July 1916 to 18 November 1916). His Battalion was in the area of Trones Wood and Maltz Horn Farm at the time of his death.
Additional Information
His father received a Dependents Pension of 6/- a week for William and his brother Walter, and Williams effects of £4-8s-10d, Pay Owing and a £4, War Gratuity. His younger brother Private 18717 Walter Waldock was Killed in Action a few days earlier on the 27th July 1916, also at the Battle of the Somme.
