Pre War

Harry Stevens was born in Whipsnade Beds in 1893 to Charles Stevens, gardener, and Louisa (nee Potton). His birthplace is recorded variously as Whipsnade, Beds, or Great Gaddesden, on the 1891 Census his family were living at Studham, close to Whipsnade.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents Lily (born 1884) and Harry were living at Row End, Flamstead. His sister Amy Lily was born in 1880 and died in 1881.

On the 1911 Census was a clerk at a Hardware Store and living with his parents at 12 Pickford Road, Markyate His parents later were living at 9 Cleveland Avenue, Markyate.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Harry. 

Harry enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps as Private 80520, it is probable that he enlisted in 1914 (scale of War Gratuity).

When he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps as Private 54559 was not found.  It is reported that Harry spent three years in Salonica but was invalided home following a bout of malaria. Whilst on the usual 10 days leave before returning to his unit he caught influenza and died on 10 Nov 1918, the day before the Armistice was signed.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £17 10s and arrears of £1 10s 2d was paid to his father Charles.

Harry's  grave bears the inscription: HARRY STEVENS WHO DIED NOVEMBER 10TH 1918 AGED 25 YEARS
