George was born in Westbourne, Sussex, about 1885.


He married Winifred Louisa Stanley in Westbourne, Sussex, in 1907.


1911 Census records George aged 26, married to Winifred, they have a daughter Ivy May aged 2, living at 77 Pond Cottage, Stansted, Nr Emsworth, Hants. His occupation is given as a Game Keeper.

Wartime Service

George enlisted in Hitchin, Herts, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the Regimental Number 3/8453.


He landed in France on 9th April 1915.


At the time of his death he was with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. George died on Monday 3rd May 1915, in the 15th Field Ambulance, from the effects of gas.


15th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, was part of 15th Brigade, 5th Division.


He is buried in the CWGC Reninghelst Churchyard Extension, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot 40.

Additional Information

His effects of £6-9s-7d, pay owing and £6, War Gratuity went to his widow Winifred Louisa. Battalion war diary. The battalion was to the left of Hill 60, and the enemy made a sudden attack on our trenches using gas, a large number of men suffered the effects of the gas and 22 admitted to hospital. Georges Medal Card states he was with the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.
