Pre War

Alfred John Fitzjohn was born in 1896 in Aldenham, Herts to Henry and Thryza Fitzjohn and baptised in Aldenham on 6 September 1896.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Folly, Aldenham, Herts where his father was working as a Coachman. (Alfred John is listed as 'John'). By 1911 he was a 14 year old servant at the house of Arthur Peasgood and family at Porters Park Golf Club, Shenley Hill, Radlett, Herts and working as waiter. He was living in  Knightsbridge, Middlesex on enlistment.

Wartime Service

He enlisted into the 8th battalion, Royal West Surrey Regiment at Marylebone, London and served in France from 31 August 1915.


Death was presumed on 25 September 1915 during the Battle of Loos as his body was not recovered for burial or not identified and his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £1 17s.
