Pre War
Geoffrey Fitz-Brown was the eldest son of George Fitzbrown,
Managing Director of a Copper Company, and Eliza F Fitzbrown. He was educated at Rhos
Preparatory School and Aldenham School , London University, Liverpool
University, and the Royal School of Mines. He was on the staff of the Broughton
Copper Company, Manchester.
Wartime Service
He enlisted as Private PS/2686 in the Public Schools Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers in September 1914, and went to the front in November, 1915.
After selection for Officer Cadet and return to UK, He was commissioned in the Durham Light Infantry in July 1916 and returned to France. He joined 22nd (Pioneers) Battalion for the attack on Le Transloy. It was on October 23rd, 1916, that he went over the parapet with his platoon, and it was whilst he was helping to dig a link trench, and encouraging his men by his example, that he was wounded. His abdominal wound was dressed by a brother officer, and he was taken to 34 Casualty Clearing Station, where died the following day.
Letters from his Colonel and several of his comrades testified to their great admiration for him. "One of the greatest comrades a man can have," was the tribute of one who knew him well.
