Pre War
Philip Ernest Viney, born in 1888, was the second son of Dr Josiah Ernest Viney and Bessie Louise (nee Creasey). He was educated at Summerfields, Oxford and at Aldenham.
He joined the Leicestershire Regiment on 8 Feb 1908 from RMC Sandhurst, progressing to Lieutenant in 16 May 1910. He was seconded to the Gold Coast Regiment, West Africa Frontier Force on 5 Oct 1911. In 1914 he was A.D.C. to Sir Hugh Clifford, Governor of the Gold Coast.
Wartime Service
He rejoined the Regiment on the outbreak of war as Captain, and went to BEF with 1st Battalion as part of 16 Brigade of 6th Division taking part in the advance to the Aisne and subsequent fighting.
He was mortally wounded by High Explosive shell during the afternoon of 14th Dec 14 and died from his wounds in field hospital at Bailleul , Flanders on 17th Dec 14. Deeply regretted by his fellow officers and the men who served under him, to whom he had endeared himself to them by his cheerful unselfishness and thought for others.
Captain Viney was a member of the Junior Army and Navy Club.

His father, M J. E. Viney of Cintra, Swanage, Dorset ordered his headstone inscription: “DEATH IS THE GATE OF LIFE GOD IS LOVE" His brother Rolf Viney (1885) was a Commander RN and Arnold (1900) was Sub/Lt RN.
