Pre War
Albert William Fishpool was born in Stretham, Cambridgeshire, in 1897, son of Charles Fishpool a, Farm Worker and Emily Jane Fishpool (nee Rowell). The eldest of six children, although two died in infancy.
1901 Census records Albert aged 3, living with his parents and brother George (1) at, Rowella Farm, Chesterton, Cambridgeshire.
1911 Census Albert aged 13, is at school, living with his parents, Brother George (11) and sister Ivy (7) in Butt Lane, Milton, Cambs.
Brother Leslie was born in Milton, Cambs, in 1913.
It is not known when the family moved to the Cheshunt area. The 1921 Census records the family living at, 51 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
Wartime Service
On enlisting Albert was posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment, initially with the service number 9125, then 269202. Seeing service on the Western Front.
Extract from the Battalion War Diary.
“On the night of 25th/26th March 1917, the enemy attempted to raid our trenches after an intense barrage. They were repelled by Lewis Gun and rifle fire before reaching our trenches.”
Albert was one of the casualties of that night. He was Killed in Action on 26th March 1917, in the Observation Ridge Sector.
Additional Information
His effects of £2-19s-3d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of
£3, went to his mother Emily Jane Fishpool.
