Percy Harold Filby/Filbey (depending on the document) was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in January 1889, son of Walter Frederick Filby a, Dairy Man and Emily Filby (nee Anthony). The seventh of ten children although one died in infancy.
He was Baptised on 3rd March 1889, with his two brothers Albert Victor and David Charles, in the Parish of Waltham Cross, Herts.
1891 Census records Percy aged 2, living with his parents and six siblings in, Crossbrook Street, Cheshunt, Herts.
His father Walter Frederick Filby died on 2nd April 1899, in South Mimms, Herts, aged 50.
1901 Census, Percy (12), his widowed mother and four siblings are now living at, 3 Park Terrace, Park Road, Finchley, Middex. His cousin Ester Richards (12) is staying with the family.
1911 Census, Percy is now working as a Butcher Salesman, living with his widowed mother, and brothers Albert (27), and Arthur (18), still at 3 Park Terrace, Park Road, Finchley, Middx.
Percy Married Elizabeth Davies in 1911, in Barnet, Middx. They went on to have two children Doris May Filby and Winifred Louisa Filby.
Wartime Service
Percy enlisted in London, posted to the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, initially with the 1st battalion then the 2nd Battalion, with the service number 23501. He arrived in France in August 1915, seeing service on the Western Front. We was Killed in Action on 18th November 1916, aged 27.
Soldiers Died in the Great War; Record he was formerly with the 14th Hussars, with the service number 4/21445. No record was found to confirm this.
Additional Information
Elizabeth received a widow’s pension of 22/11, a week from 30th July 1917, and his effects of £7-16s-10d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £9-10s-00d.
