Pre War

Laurence Henry Fenner was born on 9 Oct 1889 in Tring (baptised 15 Dec 1889 in Tring) to Henry Fenner, mineral water merchant, and Alice (nee Moore).


Laurence had an elder brother Thomas William (born 1885) who died aged 14 Months in 1887.


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, and Laurence were living at 7, Akeman Street, Tring. His father is listed as a hall keeper/waiter. On the 1901 Census Laurence was living with his mother Alice (noted as a butler’s wife) at the Grove Laundry, Grove, Tring. His father was butler at Pendley Manor, Tring.


Laurence migrated to Canada in 1908 and is is listed on the Canadian Census of 1916 as living in Wilton, Battleford, Saskatchewan.


On the 1911 census both his parents were living at Pendley Manor, Tring.

Wartime Service

Laurence attested on 18 Jul 1916 in North Battleford , Saskatchewan giving his occupation as Motor Engineer and address as Marshall, Saskatchewan, and was posted to  232 Battalion as Private 1018606. Following training Laurence left Halifax on SS Northland on 17 Apr 1917 arriving in Liverpool 29 Apr 1917and was posted 15th  Reserve Battalion.


On 5 Sep 1917 he was posted to 5th Battalion Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) in 1st Canadian Division and joined his Unit in France on 11 Oct 1917 at Passchendaele (3rd Ypres) taking part in the action known as 2nd Battle of Passchendaele (26 Oct-10 Nov 1917).


He was admitted to 6 Can Field Ambulance with Gas Poisoning on 11 Nov 1917 before transfer to 53 Gen Hosp, Boulogne the next day and on 21 Nov 1917 evacuated UK at Fort Pitt Hospital Chatham Kent.  He was moved to No 16 Can Orpington Kent on 27 Feb 1918 and discharged on 2 Apr 1918 and posted to 15 Reserve Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment Base Depot, Bramshott. On 4 Oct 1918 Laurence was admitted to 12 Canadian General Hospital Bramshott with Influenza with and is recorded as dying of Influenza there on 12 Oct 1918.
