Pre War

Horace Herbert Culverhouse as born in 1897 in Chesham, Bucks, the son of Herbert and Alice Culverhouse and one of five children although only four were living in 1911. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 153 Waterside, Chesham where his father was working as a boot maker and repairer. By 1911 they had moved to 24 Gossoms End, Berkhamsted where his father continued his trade as a boot maker and Horace was a 13 year old schoolboy. He was educated at Berkhamsted Collegiate School. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford and joined the Hertfordshire Yeomanry initially under reg. no. 2523, later changed to 105787 during the renumbering of 1917. 


He died from pneumonia on 29 May 1917 and is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £2 17s 3d. He also ordered his headstone inscription while living at 23/24 Gossoms End, Berkhamsted, Herts. it reads: "THOUGH THOUSAND OF MILES DIVIDE OUR BODIES OUR SOULS ARE EVER NEAR".


Pension cards exist but give no indication of amount of pension received.
