Pre War

John William Tyler was born 1896 in Upper Green, Tewin, Herts, the son of John and Annie Tyler, and baptised on 13 December 1896 at St Peter's Church, Tewin. He was one of four children.

In 1901 the family were boarding with John and Hannah Harding at  Upper Green, Tewin and his father was working as a labourer-woodman.

On the 1911 Census John was living at 7 Birch Green, Hertingfordbury, Herts with his mother and brother William and John was working as a garden boy (domestic). His father was not listed with them.

Wartime Service

John enlisted in Hertford and served with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. His reg. no. of 10114 suggests that he joined the army in early 1913 and would have been a serving soldier at the outbreak of war. (He may have lied about his age on enlistment as recruits were required to be 18 or over and would not be sent overseas until age 19).

He was present with his battalion in the trenches at Givenchy in October 1914 and in action attacking the German line at Violaines when they were rushed by the enemy. About 40 men were killed or missing. Death was presumed on or since 22 October 1914.

He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £5.00 and pay owing of £10 14s 10d. Pension cards exist which suggest a pension was awarded but give no indication of the amount received.
