Pre War

Arthur John Tyler was born in Little Berkhamsted on 20 January 1886, the son of Thomas and Mary Tyler, and baptised there on 21 March 1886. He was one of eight children.

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Little Berkhamsted where his father was working as a general labourer. They remained there in 1901 at which time Arthur was working as a gardener domestic. By the time of the 1911 Census, Arthur was the only child living at home with his parents at Epping Green, Little Berkhamsted and was continuing to work as a gardener.

He married Margaret Bullen in 1916 and they lived at Epping Green, Little Berkhamsted. Sadly she died on 10 November 1917.

His father later lived at 27 Hertingfordbury, Herts.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment (service number 26847 suggests he enlisted in early 1916), and later transferred to the 6th Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment (who fought alongside the 7th Bedfords in the 54th Brigade).

He died of wounds on 10 August 1917, aged 32, probably as a result of the actions around Glencourse Wood (Third Battle of Ypres) and is buried in Mendingham Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Additional Information

His mother in law Margaret Bullen received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of 18s 8d on behalf of his widow as she died only a few months after Arthur. As his widow was not able to claim a pension, his father Arthur was awarded a pension of 10s a week.
