Pre War

Percy Gedge Twyman was born in Cheshunt, Herts, in 1883, son of Edward George Twyman a, Tailor (believed to be his own tailoring business) and Caroline Gedge Twyman (nee Haswell). One of twelve children although three died in infancy. Edward was a local councillor.


1891 Census records Percy aged 8, living with his parents, five sisters and brother Ernest (6) in, Turners Hill, Cheshunt, Herts. His Grandmother Elizabeth Twyman and his uncle Frederick Twyman, a Tailor, are living with the family, they also have a boarder Robert Turpey, a Tailor.


1901 Census, Percy (18) is working as a Clerk, living with his parents, sisters Mable (24), and Millicent (15) at, 69 Turners Hill, Cheshunt, Herts. His uncle Frederick Twyford and boarder Robert Turpey are still living with the family, both Tailor.


1911 Census record for Percy was not found.

Wartime Service

Percy enlisted, posted to the 10th (Stockbrokers) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) with the service number STK/555. Quickly rising through the ranks to Sergeant, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 4th January 1916. Seeing action on the Western Front, Percy died on 15th April 1917, from wounds received in action, he is buried in Etaples military Cemetery in France. Grave Ref: XVII. A. 4.


It was reported in the local paper that His father travelled to France as soon as he heard that Percy had been wounded. but that he arrived too late.

Additional Information

His effects of £92-02s-04d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £10-10s-00d, went to his father Edward George Twyman.
