Francis O'Conner Twomey was born in Kilor, Penshurst, Victoria, the son of Daniel and Helen Twomey, and educated at Beaumont College, Old Windsor, Berks, England.


He was a single man and worked as a Grazier.  He gave his next of kin as his sister, E E (Ethel Eleanor) Sargent, c/o National Bank of Australasia, 5 Bishopsgate Street, London.

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 26 April 1915 as a Private in the 5th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement.


His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes on 16 July 1915. He was promoted, and commissioned as Lieutenant with the 60th Battalion whilst overseas. 


He died of wounds received at Bullecourt, France, age 40.  

Additional Information

Mrs Rita Jameson, Kolor, Penshurst, Vic. Australia, ordered his headstone inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAT A MAN GIVETH HIS LIFE FOR GIVETH HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS R.I.P." N.B. His sister Ethel died on 3 August 1915 in England.
