Stuart was born on the 28th June 1887, in Tottenham. The son of Thomas Farrin a salesman and Kate Farrin. He was Baptised on the 23rd December 1888, in the Parish of All Hallows, Tottenham.


The 1901 Census shows Stuart aged 13, living with his Parents and his Sister Kathleen, at 10 Dalmeney Avenue, Islington. The 1911 Census shows Stuart aged 23, a visitor at 83 Highbury Hill, Islington. His occupation is given as a Student Engineer. He studied engineering at Kings Collage, London. He obtained his degree a B. Sc (Eng.) London, in July 1911. Stuart worked for Messer’s G. H. Innes, of Hitchin for 4 years and then the Madras and Southern Madrata Railway Company in India.


He applied to be an Associate Member of the Instruction of Civil Engineers in October 1914. His application was balloted and approved in February 1915.

Wartime Service

Stuart returned from India and enlisted with the 263rd Railway Company, Royal Engineers. They embarked for France and Flanders on the 26th April 1917.


Stuart died of his wounds on the 7th December 1917. The 263rd Railway Company was raised at Longmoor in Hampshire, (The Royal Engineers, Railway Depot).

Additional Information

The His personal inscription on the headstone reads: “Son of the late Thomas and Kate Farrin of London”. The Wall Table within St Ippolyts Church reads: “ SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF 2nd LIEUT. S.T. FARRIN, R.E. BORN JUNE 28th 1887, DIED OF WOUNDS DECEMBER 7t
