The Battalion and William went France on 27 Jul 1916 landing at Le Havre. The Battalion were allocated to 190 Brigade, 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. This Battalion had originally consisted entirely of Royal Navy personnel but now included Army Formations. They were deployed to the Somme Battlefield to take part in the Battle of the Ancre (13 Nov -18 Nov 1916) a latter action of the Battle of the Somme. The Ancre is situated in the Northern area of the Somme Battlefield. The British forces attacked in fog and snow on 13 Nov using the very same front lines from which the attack had failed so badly on 1 July. Beaumont-Hamel was finally captured but Serre once again proved an objective too far.. William was killed in Action on 13 Nov 1916.
