William John Turner was born in Bishop's Stortford on 16 January 1899 to Martha Turner and baptised at Sawbridgeworth on 2 April 1899. She later lived at 9 Heath Road, Hounslow, Middx.
Wartime Service
He enlisted at Hounslow and served with the Machine Gun Corps. The Register of Soldiers’ Effects states that his death was accepted as being 21.10.18 in Germany and the pension records confirm that he died in hospital in Germany. This is usually because a soldier was taken as a prisoner of war.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £7 10s and pay owing of £25 5s 6d. She also received a pension of 11 shillings a week from 1 July 1919.
His mother, Mrs M Turner of 51 Brook Rd, Brentford, Middx. ordered his headstone inscription: "GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN BY HIS LOVING MOTHER"
